Transformer, What is It and How Does It Work?

Transformers are electrical devices that play a fundamental role in the transmission of electrical energy. These devices are used to transmit electrical energy from one circuit to another and to change voltage levels. Transformers operate on the principle of electromagnetic induction. Basic Structure of a Transformer:

Operating Principle of a Transformer: A transformer operates based on the transfer of magnetic flux from one coil to another. The alternating current applied to the primary coil generates a magnetic field. This magnetic field induces voltage in the secondary coil through the iron core. The turns ratio between the two coils determines the voltage transformation ratio. For example, if we want to transform a voltage of 100 volts in the primary to 50 volts in the secondary, the primary coil should have 100 turns, and the secondary coil should have 50 turns.

Applications of Transformers:

  1. Electric Distribution: Large transformers convert high-voltage electricity generated in power plants to lower voltages for distribution to our cities.
  2. Industrial Applications: In factories and industrial facilities, transformers are used to operate electric motors and power other electrical devices.
  3. Electronic Devices: Transformers are used in household appliances like computers, televisions, radios, and other electronic devices.
  4. Rail Transportation Systems: In rail transportation systems like trains and subways, transformers are used to transport and regulate electrical energy.

Open Transformer:

Open transformers are devices typically not enclosed in a closed structure and are used in open-air environments.
