What is Peltier and What is its Working Principle?

What is a Peltier Module?

A Peltier module is known as a thermoelectric cooler (TEC). When direct current is applied, it cools one surface while heating the other. This phenomenon is called the Peltier effect, discovered in 1834 by French physicist Jean Charles Athanase Peltier.

The TEC1-12715 available on our website contains 127 semiconductor pairs and can be used for both cooling and heating purposes. Despite its compact 40×40 mm size, it delivers high performance.

Working Principle

  • When direct current is applied, electrons start moving.
  • This movement absorbs heat from one surface and transfers it to the other.
  • As a result, one side of the module cools while the other side heats up.
  • When the current direction is reversed, the surfaces switch roles (cooling/heating is reversed).

TEC1-12715 Technical Specifications

Model TEC1-12715
Dimensions 40×40×3.3 mm
Operating Voltage 12 V (max 15.4 V)
Maximum Current 15 A
Maximum Power 231 W
Maximum Temperature Difference (ΔT) 70 °C
Operating Temperature Range −30 °C … 70 °C

Advantages

  • Operates silently and without vibration (no moving parts).
  • Small size and compact design.
  • Can be used for both cooling and heating by reversing the current direction.
  • Provides instant response.

Disadvantages

  • Relatively low efficiency (high power consumption).
  • Must always be used with an effective heat sink and fan.

Applications

  • Mini refrigerators and portable coolers
  • Cooling of electronics such as CPU, GPU, laser diodes, sensors
  • Local temperature control in medical devices
  • Hobby projects (e.g., beverage coolers)

Peltier modules are components that provide quiet and compact cooling powered by electricity. Motorobit’s TEC1-12715 model stands out with its high cooling capacity. However, for maximum performance, it must be used together with a heat sink and fan.
