Benefits of Using a Turns Ratio in LAN Transformers
- Voltage Step-Down
When the turns ratio is 2:1, the voltage on the secondary side (chip or PHY side) is half the voltage on the primary side (network cable side).
This is important to protect integrated circuit components such as the MAC or PHY from high voltages or interference.
- Improving Voltage Compatibility for PHY Systems
Some Ethernet PHY chips cannot withstand full voltage signals from the cable (especially in 100BASE-T or 1000BASE-T environments). Therefore, a 2:1 transformer is used to reduce the input voltage.
This allows for the use of smaller transistors in the input circuits.
- Improving Electrical Isolation
By transforming the voltage, the isolation between the Line Side and the Chip Side is increased. This provides better protection against noise and electrostatic discharge (ESD).
- Reducing EMI (Electromagnetic Interference)
Reducing the voltage also reduces the electromagnetic waves emitted from the system. This helps in passing EMC/EMI tests (Electromagnetic Compatibility).
